21 SEPTEMBER
THE MAYAN CALENDAR DECODING
OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
The ancient Mayas were extremely accurate time keepers who used many different calendars and day counts in order to live in harmony with the movements of the cosmos. These not only relate to our solar system but also to the galaxy. The Mayas knew about the potent times we are living in and particularly our moving towards a galactic alignment which occurs every 26,000 years and which coincides with the Precession of the Equinoxes great cycle. Indeed our sun is about to align with the dark passage of the Milky way that the Mayas call the Sacred Tree. The closest and most important point has been timed for the Winter Solstice of 21 December 2012 which the Mayas have marked as the end day of their Long Count creation cycle of 13 Baktun (13 x 144,000 days or 5,125 years). Such an event will create profound solar and planetary changes. It announces exponential transformations into a completely different age. The teachings of the Sacred Mayan Calendar are therefore a timely encoded gift for such a quantum leap.
One of the most important Mayan calendars is the Tzolkin which has 260 days, the same duration as a human gestation. It is very sacred and traditionally used in cosmology, astrology, divination, shamanism and ceremonies. To ‘decode’ a date such as birthdays means converting the usual Gregorian calendar date into one of the 260 Tzolkin days. This will give you a unique combination of one of the 20 Mayan signs and one of the 13 numbers (20 x 13 = 260).
Nowadays the traditional count of days is used and also a modern version by Jose Argüelles which gives another signature in the Tzolkin calendar and corresponds to our ‘galactic mission’ during this ‘end day period’. So for the decoding of this year’s International Day of Peace we will use these two counts which are combined to describe the qualities at play during this event.
Traditional Mayan count
9 CABAN going into 10 ETZNAB after sunset – MULUC 13 day cycle
This period enhances purification and our emotions. Today we can persevere and strengthen our intentions in order to bring about the wisdom and the goodness promised by the Caban energies. In Mayaland this day is traditionally used for village councils as it gives us the power to use our brain in conjunction with our heart. A lot can be reached today through the movement of synchronicities in people’s interactions. The energy will be higher in the evening as we manifest together the peace we have been focusing on. Etznab, which is traditionally the sharp obsidian flint knife, represents both conflict and by polarity it has the equal potential for peace. It is interesting that this sign comes for the culmination of this event centred around this subject. Also appropriate is the theme of blood sacrifices which are usually associated in people’s mind with this civilisation. It is through the Mexican Toltec invasion of the Mayan area in the late period that sacrifices were introduced and it may be said that this is what greatly contributed to end the Mayan civilisation. The Aztecs who were the leading people at the time of the Spanish conquest in the middle of the 16th century practised blood sacrifices en masse and this is the picture that was conveyed in the codices written by the Spanish catholic friars. So through our singing together and our meditative focus on peace, this evening is certainly a good moment to purify all suffering, all times of violent history, all wars, all genocides and all eradications of culture. During this beautiful evening we will experience the highest peaceful quality of the sacred Mayan guide Etznab.
Modern or Dreamspell count
6 CIMI going into 7 MANIK after sunset - IMIX 13 day cycle
In the modern count the 260 days cycle of the Tzolkin will have just started 5 days before and this feels like an important beginning. Today we can get into the rhythm and be organised. Our link with the ancestors will be particularly relevant to reach another level of awareness on this day. It will feel very fluid whilst at the same time quite productive in our individual endeavours. We can also take the time to be present. As we move into the musical evening, we will truly experience transforming, nurturing healing energies which will be channelled within us and around us.
Through the link of both traditional and modern counts it is likely that in the evening an especially strong healing will take place.
Thank you to Tim and to all the participants!

“If there is to be
any peace
it will come
through being,
not having”
-
Henry Miller
"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes
out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from
a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can
sweep down the mightiest walls"
- Robert F. Kennedy
